When the colder months arrive and temperatures go below zero, the moisture and humidity leaking into your loft will accumulate and condense on the underside of your sub zero temperature roofing membrane. Depending on the temperature, ventilation and insolation (i.e. can the sun get to your roof) you will have either frost (known as ice damming) or water collecting. If you're baffled by frost and condensation only seeming to form on one side of your roof, you're probably looking at the North side. The sun will often warm the South side enough to thaw and evaporate moisture effectively but still leave it coated on the North side. The problem then is that while insolation has dealt with South facing frosts through evaporation, the unintentional consequence is that your North facing roof space has been warmed up enough to melt the ice - but NOT enough direct heat for effective full evaporation. • Hang your washing outside if possible, or hang it in the bathroom with the door closed and the window open - or the extractor on
• If you have a tumble dryer that is not a condenser model, make sure it has an outlet vent connected to the outside and don't use radiators for drying at all
• Reduce steam in the bath by running cold water first and then adding the hot
• Cook with pan lids on and the extractor fan on. Use only as much water as you need to cover vegetables and turn the heat down when the water has boiled
• Open windows and vents whenever possible to allow air to circulate, especially when cooking or washing up
• Use an extractor fan or open a bathroom window for about 20 minutes after showering or having a bath
• Leave your bedroom window open at night, even if only very slightly
• Keep the kitchen and bathroom doors closed so moisture cannot escape into the rest of the house
• Keep a small gap between large furniture and the wall, and where possible place it against an internal wall
• Its better to keep a medium temperature throughout your house than to heat one room to a high temperature
• Fit draught excluder to leaky windows and doors - don't forget the letter box.
